Principal Engineer
The City of La Caada Flintridge is inviting applications for the position of Principal Engineer in the Public Works Department. This position will be part of an engaged, focused, and enthusiastic team and will provide complex and responsible support to the Director of Public Works by managing and leading the staff and operations of the Engineering Division within the Public Works Department. Under the general direction of the Director of Public Works, the Principal Engineer manages and leads the staff and operations of the Engineering Division including planning, budgeting, design, and construction of the City's Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and special projects; review and approval of various permit applications, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The Principal Engineer will also participate in the development of policies and strategies for division operations and manage the effective use of division resources to improve organizational productivity and customer service.
Nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, just north of the cities of Pasadena and Glendale, the City of La Caada Flintridge is a low-density, residential community which enjoys a rural character and a small-town atmosphere while maintaining close proximity to the downtown Los Angeles urban center. Commercial development in the City is almost exclusively limited to the frontage along Foothill Boulevard, the main surface thoroughfare. The City of La Caada Flintridge is home to Descanso Gardens, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, five municipal parks, an extensive trails system, and more. The City has a population of approximately 20,000 people within its 8.6 square miles. The City was incorporated as a general-law city on December 8, 1976, with a Council/Manager form of government. Some city services are provided under contract with the County of Los Angeles or other private entities. In-house staff provides general administration, public works, and planning services to the community.

The monthly City-paid benefit is $1,925, which is available on the first of the month following hire date. It may be used to purchase health insurance (under the CalPERS Health Insurance program), dental insurance (Delta), and vision insurance (VSP). Alternatively, if you do not elect benefits which will use any or all this amount, you may elect to receive the remaining Cafeteria Plan amount, up to a maximum of $1,200 in taxable cash. Optional participation in Flexible Spending Accounts, including the Health Flexible Spending Account and Dependent Day Care, are also available.
PEPRA members receive the 2%@62 benefit formula with highest three-year compensation. PEPRA members will contribute 7.75% of their pay towards the cost of their retirement program. Classic members receive the 2%@55 benefit formula with highest one-year compensation. Classic members contribute 7% of their pay towards the employee contribution to CalPERS. The City does not participate in the Social Security system for employees covered by CalPERS.
Holidays: 13 paid holidays per year. Vacation: 1-5 years of service 80 hours per year; 6-10 years of service 120 hours per year; 10+ years of service 160 hours per year. Sick Leave: 96 hours per year. Administrative Leave: 100 hours per year. Once each fiscal year, full-time employees may "cash-out" or place into their 457 Deferred Compensation Plan up to 70 hours of accumulated vacation or administrative leave. The City offers an optional 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. The City contributes a lump-sum amount of seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) to permanent employees at the end of the fiscal year. Employees become eligible for this benefit once they have successfully passed their initial probationary period of one year and attained permanent employment status. $100,000 employer-paid life insurance for full-time employees. Supplemental coverage available for purchase.
