Job description

Lead OperatorReporting to: Excavation Superintendent Role Definition As a Lead Operator, you are the on-the-ground leader responsible for the day-to-day management of all excavation, grading, and site-work activities. You will be the critical link between the Project Manager and the field crews, ensuring that project plans are executed flawlessly and that all work complies with the highest standards of safety and quality. Your leadership will directly influence crew productivity, site safety, and the successful delivery of our civil construction projects. You are not just overseeing work; you are actively problem-solving, mentoring your team, and ensuring the project's foundation is set for success. Core Responsibilities Primary FunctionsDirectly supervise and coordinate the daily activities of excavation crews, including equipment operators, laborers, to ensure project tasks are completed efficiently. Conduct daily pre-shift safety briefings (toolbox talks) to address job-specific hazards, review safety protocols, and ensure all personnel are equipped with appropriate PPE. Interpret and implement civil engineering plans, blueprints, and grade specifications to guide all on-site excavation trenching, and backfilling operations. Champion a "safety-first" culture on-site, enforcing all company and OSHA regulations, including trench safety, confined space entry, and utility strike prevention. Manage the sequencing of work and coordinate with other trades and subcontractors to maintain project schedules and avoid conflicts. Operate, or demonstrate proficiency in operating, various types of heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, loaders, and graders to guide or assist crews as needed. Routinely inspect the work site for potential hazards, taking immediate corrective action to mitigate risks and maintain a safe working environment for all personnel. Monitor and manage the allocation and use of heavy equipment and resources, scheduling deliveries of materials like aggregate, pipe, and backfill to align with project timelines. Perform and document regular quality control checks to verify that grades, elevations, and compaction meet strict project specifications and industry standards. Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for inspectors, clients, and project engineers, providing clear updates and addressing any questions or concerns professionally. Troubleshoot and resolve on-site issues, such as unexpected soil conditions, equipment malfunctions, or utility conflicts, in a timely and cost-effective manner. Complete and submit accurate daily field reports, documenting crew hours, equipment usage, work completed, site conditions, and any incidents or delays. Train, mentor, and develop crew members, providing constructive feedback and coaching to enhance their skills, productivity, safety awareness. Coordinate and verify utility locates (811/One-Call) and ensure all existing underground infrastructure is properly marked and protected before any digging begins. Manage site logistics, including equipment staging, material stockpiling, and maintaining clear access and egress routes for all site traffic. Ensure that all excavation and trenching activities comply with OSHA Subpart P, including the proper use of shoring systems, trench boxes, or sloping techniques.Collaborate with the Project Manager on short-term look-ahead schedules, resource planning, and identifying potential risks or opportunities. Maintain a professional and organized job site, ensuring good housekeeping practices are followed to promote safety and efficiency. Secondary FunctionsParticipate in pre-construction meetings, to review project plans and provide valuable field-level input on constructability. Maintain accurate logs for equipment maintenance and inspection, coordinating with the shop for necessary repairs. Hard Skills (Technical)Blueprint and Civil Plan Interpretation: Deep understanding of construction drawings, cut/fill sheets, and grading plans. Heavy Equipment Operations Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of the capabilities and safe operation of excavators, dozers, loaders, compactors, etc. OSHA 30-Hour Certification: Demonstrable, up to date certification is essentialTrenching & Shoring Expertise: In-depth knowledge of OSHA standards for excavation safety, including sloping, benching, and protective systems. Grade Control & Surveying: Proficiency with laser levels, transits, and GPS grade controls system (e.g., Topcon, Trimble). Soil Identification and Analysis: Ability to classify soils and understand their characteristics as they relate to excavation and compaction. Digital Reporting: Competency with daily reporting software on a tablet or laptop (e.g., Procore, HCSS, HeavyJob). First Aid/CPR Certification: Current certification is highly desirable. Soft SkillsLeadership & Crew Motivation: Ability to lead by example, command respect, and inspire a team to perform at a high level. Assertive Communication: Clearly and confidently direct crews, communicate with inspectors, and report to management.Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving: Aptitude for quickly identifying problems on-site and developing effective solutions under pressure.Safety-Oriented Mindset: An unwavering commitment to enforcing safety protocols without compromise.Time Management & Organization: Excellent ability to prioritize tasks, manage crew time, and keep a job site organized and on schedule. Conflict Resolution: Skill in de-escalating disagreements among crew members or with subcontractors. Adaptability: Flexibility to handle unexpected site conditions, weather delays, and changes in project scope. EducationMinimum Education: High School Diploma, or GED equivalent ExperienceTypical Experience Range: 5-10 years of progressive experience in civil construction, site work, or earthmoving operationsPreferred: A minimum of 3 years in a direct leadership capacity (Foreman, Lead Hand, or Supervisor) on excavation or utility projects. Verifiable experience managing crews of 5 or more people is strongly preferred.
