Job description

Engineering Manager II

Are you dreaming about a position where you can deliver quality, meaningful results? Come be a part of our diverse, multi-disciplined team of engineers, operating in an agile environment, using the latest tools and methodologies. Develop your technical acumen as well as your leadership skills at a company with huge potential for long-term career growth. As an Engineering Manager II, you will enhance functional team performance through advanced technical leadership and problem-solving. By building high-performing teams, you will drive innovation and successful project outcomes. Your expertise in project management and risk assessment will efficiently manage complex projects, optimize resources, and mitigate risks. You will focus on process improvements, ensuring efficiency and compliance with standards. Through cross-functional collaboration and innovation management, you will align our initiatives with strategic goals. Your analytical thinking and A&D regulatory knowledge will ensure our solutions are both innovative and compliant.

Responsibilities:

  • Services & Compliance Scope (via your teams):
    • BA IT: services and support specific to the business area, outside of standard Corp IT offerings. This includes:
      • Laptop and hardware provisioning for specialized configurations, program-specific builds, edge-case requests outside of Corp IT scope
      • Server setup and maintenance for BA systems and program support environments
    • Functional Support
      • Lab management oversight: partnering with the lab manager on operations, capacity, and access. Guidance to Enterprise-wide expectations of Lab Manager job responsibilities
      • System administration: setting job expectations, standards, and job scope for sysadmins across the engineering org
    • CMMC compliance support and execution
    • Program systems support making sure programs get the IT/infrastructure they need to deliver on an adhoc cadence

Leadership & Business Responsibilities (direct to you):

  • Manage, coach, and grow the leads and technical staff reporting to you. This includes career development, performance conversations, and building bench strength
  • Own the budget for BA System Support. Participate in annual planning, defend it, and make trade-offs as necessary that respect cost, risk, schedule, and priority
  • Advance the org's vision, identifying and driving initiatives to completion that is both valuable and cost-effective
  • Represent the team in cross-functional forums. Defend and negotiate for what is best for the business, including pushing back on requests that don't serve program or BA outcomes
  • Drive scalability, automation, and a common approach as the default; approve deliberate exceptions for appropriate business cases
  • Balance the speed of the business against enterprise cost, risk, schedule, and priority. Resist both "everything is special" and "one size fits all"

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Bachelor's of Science degree in a related discipline
  • Typically, 8+ years of progressive engineering experience, which includes 4+ years of management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and develop high-performing technical teams. Includes hiring, coaching, performance management, career development, etc.
  • Working understanding of program-funded environments, including direct vs. indirect labor, program billing, and handling of sensitive data
  • Track record of owning a budget and making cost/risk/schedule trade-offs
  • Strong communication skills. Able to represent, defend, and negotiate on behalf of the team with cross-functional peers and senior leadership
  • Technically aware, willing, and able to dig into the details when the situation requires it (not a hands-off manager)

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Background in IT, platform engineering, infrastructure, or systems administration. Enough hands-on depth to make credible technical calls and challenge your teams' designs
  • Direct experience with CMMC (or NIST 800-171 / DFARS) compliance programs. Driving controls, evidence, and audit readiness, understanding of risk management.
  • Experience managing BA-level or program-level IT functions that operate alongside, but distinct from, enterprise Corp IT
  • Working awareness of cybersecurity practices (secure baselines, vulnerability management, access control, incident response) applied at the BA/program level
  • Experience overseeing lab environments and specialized hardware/server footprints for engineering or program use
  • Prior experience driving automation and standardization across sysadmin and provisioning workflows, while allowing principled exceptions
  • Growth mindset. Visibly invests in the development of the people around them
  • Prior experience representing a technical team in cross-functional negotiations (with program management, engineering, security, or Corp IT)

Essential Functions:

  • Must be able to work in an office environment or hybrid setting.
  • Ability to travel as required (up to 10% of the time).
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
  • Clearly convey technical information, design specifications, and project updates to team members, stakeholders, and management.
  • Ability to understand technical documents, schematics, and electronic instrument measurements.
  • Ability to work with and collaboratively lead teams of engineers.

This posting will be open for application for a minimum of 5 days and may be extended based on business needs.
