Job description

Cullerton Group has a new opportunity for a Dev/Research Engineer 2 in Tucson, AZ. The work will be 100% onsite at a proving ground, Monday–Friday from 7:00 AM–3:30 PM. This is a 12-month position that can lead to permanent employment with our client. Compensation is up to $51/hr + full benefits (vision, dental, health insurance, 401k, and holiday pay). Non-local candidates may be considered if they are willing to relocate at their own expense.
Job Summary
The Dev/Research Engineer 2 will support hands-on testing and validation of large mining equipment and its mechanical, electrical, and software subsystems. This position will plan, execute, and document machine-level testing to verify functionality, performance, durability, safety, and overall product requirements. The engineer will work closely with engineers, mechanics, operators, and technicians in a highly hands-on proving-ground environment.
Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, execute, and document physical and machine-level testing for current and next-generation equipment.
  • Develop test plans, perform system-level validation and checkouts, collect data, and analyze test results.
  • Troubleshoot and validate mechanical, electrical, and software systems to identify and resolve equipment or subsystem issues.
  • Work directly with engineers, mechanics, operators, instrumentation technicians, supply chain, and logistics teams.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, continuous improvement, and completing projects on schedule and within budget.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required; 2-year degrees are not accepted.
  • 1–2 years of relevant experience; internships may count toward experience.
  • Hands-on experience with testing, validation, troubleshooting, mechanical work, construction, automotive, industrial machinery, or similar equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machine and subsystem issues and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and electrical schematics.
  • Strong attention to detail, communication, teamwork, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable working primarily around equipment rather than at a desk, including indoor/outdoor environments and hot, cold, or dusty conditions.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment after appropriate training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with heavy equipment, automotive, mining, construction, forestry, agricultural, or industrial machinery.
  • Experience designing and executing test strategies or system-level validation.
  • Data acquisition experience.
  • Hands-on mechanical experience working with vehicles, equipment, or machinery.
  • Experience working directly with technicians, mechanics, operators, or other field personnel.

Why This Role?
This position offers an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer who wants to spend significant time working directly with large, advanced machinery rather than sitting behind a desk. You’ll gain hands-on experience with machine-level testing, troubleshooting, data acquisition, and validation while collaborating with experienced engineers, mechanics, operators, and technicians. The role provides exposure to next-generation equipment and real-world engineering challenges in a proving-ground environment.
