Business Development Engineer

This position requires broad process-design expertise and strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills. Reporting to the Process Technology Manager, the Business Development Engineer identifies optimal, cost-effective, fit-for-purpose solutions to process and chemistry challenges. The role responds quickly to business needs and requires agility, rapid learning, and the ability to deliver with limited information and supervision.

Essential Functions

  • Reporting to: Process Technology Manager
  • Process Technology Support:
    • Develop early-stage conceptual design packages for new processes, tolls, chemistries, and trials.
    • Collaborate with R&D to understand new-process requirements
    • Develop flow plans and heat-and-material balances, including utility balances.
    • Verify existing equipment for new service and perform preliminary sizing for new equipment.
    • Evaluate utility availability, plot plans, layouts, and facility siting.
    • Organize and lead operations, maintenance, and safety reviews.
    • Prepare cost estimates and provide technical expertise.
    • Work with vendors and equipment suppliers to identify applicable technologies.
    • Generate flow sheets for new campaigns and support operations during new trials.
  • Engineering Support:
    • Support mechanical-integrity, troubleshooting, debottlenecking, and general plant-engineering needs.
    • Develop FEL-level project scopes, including basis-of-design documents and facility design bases.
    • Perform equipment verification, preliminary equipment sizing, and hydraulic evaluations.
    • Define instrumentation, process-control, preliminary process-safety, and SIS requirements.
    • Develop design drawings, including PFDs, P&IDs, and plot plans.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, including but not limited to continuously growing in alignment with the Company's core values, competencies, and skills.

Education Qualifications

  • Required Bachelor's Degree Chemical Engineering from an accredited university

Experience Qualifications

  • Required 10+ years work experience in a technical leadership role, manufacturing leadership role or similar engineering role directing technical resources
  • Required Chemical or petrochemical manufacturing experience

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong command of chemical-engineering fundamentals and process modeling.
  • Ability to model simple to moderately complex systems, including distillation, mixed gas/liquid systems, and recycle systems, and to select an appropriate thermodynamic package.
  • Ability to size and verify heat exchangers, condensers, reboilers, pumps, motors, liquid-vapor separators, and accumulators.
  • General understanding of process-safety principles, including PHA and layer of protection analysis (LOPA).
  • Ability to evaluate and size pressure-relief valves, including inlet and outlet piping, design contingencies, and scenario documentation.
  • Understanding of and adherence to the MOC process.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods of time, up to 12 hours per day.
  • Sitting. Working from a seated position for up to 12 hours per day.
  • Climbing. Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms one to two times per day.
  • Balancing. Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing or crouching on narrow or slippery surfaces.
  • Stooping. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Kneeling. Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching. Bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.
  • Reaching. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Pushing. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force, exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to move objects forward, downward or outward.
  • Pulling. Using upper extremities to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting. Raising objects up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds consistently from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
  • Grasping. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Possible subject to environmental conditions. Activities could occur inside and outside.
  • Subject to extreme heat. Temperatures above 100 for periods of more than one hour.
  • Subject to vibration. Exposure to movements of the extremities or whole body. Operate/drive utility vehicle.
  • Subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE for tasks as required. FRC uniform, hard hat, safety toe work boots, safety glasses, gloves etc.
