Job description

Kelly Services is seeking recent graduates and emerging technicians for a hands-on Controls Workshop Technician Intern opportunity in Houston, Texas. This role offers on-the-job training, practical experience, and the opportunity to grow with a great organization.

Pay: $19.00 (DOE)
Location: Houston, TX 77044
Schedule: Full-time, Monday–Friday, 40 hours per week
Job Type: Temp - possible hire

About the Role

As a Controls Workshop Technician Intern, you will work under direct supervision while learning to test, troubleshoot, and assemble mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components. This opportunity is ideal for recent graduates or individuals with hands-on experience through hobbies, side jobs, trade work, construction, automotive repair, electrical projects, or similar activities.

Responsibilities

  • Test, troubleshoot, and assemble mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic assemblies.
  • Follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
  • Use measuring tools, hand tools, and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Read and interpret hydraulic, electrical, or electronic schematics.
  • Identify schematic symbols and use legends to understand system layouts.
  • Perform standardized and routine workshop tasks under supervision.
  • Apply foundational knowledge of networking, electricity, and industrial controls.
  • Use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Use an iPad for work-related tasks and documentation.
  • Follow all safety procedures and established company policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Recent graduate or individual interested in developing technical workshop skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude demonstrated through work experience, hobbies, side jobs, internships, automotive repair, woodworking, construction, electrical work, or similar activities.
  • Ability to use measuring, hand, and power tools.
  • Foundational understanding of electrical concepts, including:
    • Current, voltage, resistance, conductance, and insulation.
    • Resistance in series and parallel circuits.
    • Current flow through series and parallel resistors.
    • Ohm meters and how they operate.
    • Wire size, resistance, and cross talk.
  • Foundational understanding of networking concepts, including:
    • OSI and TCP/IP models.
    • Switches, routers, hubs, and modems.
    • IP addresses and MAC addresses.
    • LANs and WANs.
    • DHCP.
    • IP addressing and subnetting.
  • Ability to read and understand hydraulic, electrical, or electronic schematics.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity and proficiency using an iPad.
  • Ability to work safely in an industrial and safety-sensitive environment.
  • Ability to follow instructions and established procedures consistently.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate is dependable, eager to learn, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working with tools and technical equipment. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their skills rather than simply list them on an application. A practical assessment of Microsoft Office and technical knowledge may be included during the selection process.
