Position Overview
Texas Health and Human Services Commission (THHSC) is seeking an experienced Database Administrator 2 to support database administration, data warehousing, database development, performance tuning, security, recovery, and reporting environments.
The candidate will be responsible for maintaining and supporting enterprise database systems, ensuring data integrity and performance, assisting with database design and implementation, and providing technical support to application development and business teams.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, implement, maintain, and monitor enterprise database systems.
Create and maintain production databases and related database programs.
Monitor database performance, memory usage, record distribution, and system efficiency.
Perform database performance tuning and recommend improvements.
Analyze and implement database changes based on business and application requirements.
Work closely with programmers, analysts, developers, and business users to understand database impacts.
Provide technical assistance and answer user questions related to databases and data access.
Support the planning, development, maintenance, and monitoring of integrated database environments.
Perform logical and physical data modeling.
Design relational database models and develop physical data models from logical models.
Develop and maintain data warehouses and data marts.
Work with Star Schema, Snowflake Schema, and highly normalized data models.
Ensure data integrity, minimize data redundancy, and manage database population and reorganization.
Maintain the data dictionary and ensure consistency of data definitions and standards.
Develop and maintain database security, backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures.
Execute database backup, restore, recovery, and retrieval procedures following established standards.
Create and maintain test database environments for application development teams.
Assist with database software installation, configuration, and implementation.
Assist with database security standards, disaster recovery procedures, benchmarking, and threshold testing.
Evaluate database management software and assist with database technology selection.
Support ETL processes, data sourcing, transformation, and data loading.
Develop and use SQL for data extraction, transformation, and analysis.
Work with reporting and analytical tools to support business and decision-making requirements.
Provide support for database-related accessibility requirements and ensure database user interfaces and reports comply with applicable EIR accessibility standards.
Work effectively with both technical and non-technical teams while managing multiple priorities.
Required Qualifications and Experience
5+ years of experience working with database management systems.
Strong knowledge of database management systems, data warehousing, and decision-support tools.
5+ years of experience developing, implementing, and maintaining data warehouses and data marts.
5+ years of experience with Business Objects or similar business intelligence/reporting tools.
Experience building and maintaining data dictionaries.
Strong experience using database access tools for application delivery.
Strong understanding of analysis, planning, and management reporting functions.
5+ years of experience with data warehousing, data population, and data modeling techniques.
Strong knowledge of Star Schema, Snowflake Schema, and normalized data models.
Experience with GUI-based ETL tools such as Informatica, IBM WebSphere DataStage, or similar technologies.
Experience implementing enterprise-class databases such as Teradata, Oracle, SQL Server, or similar technologies.
Experience with analytical and reporting tools such as Business Objects, Cognos, Hyperion, MicroStrategy, or similar tools.
Experience across the complete data warehouse implementation lifecycle, including:
o Business requirements gathering
o Logical data modeling
o Physical database design
o Data sourcing
o Data transformation
o Data loading
o SQL development
o End-user reporting and analytical tools
o Database and SQL performance optimization
