Job description

Disability Examiner - Madison, Wisconsin

Join Gainwell as a Para Examiner and help evaluate initial disability benefit claims under applicable Social Security laws, regulations, and policies. In this role, you will review and analyze medical, psychological, vocational, and other evidentiary records; assess impairment severity; document case findings; and make accurate, well-supported disability eligibility recommendations. This position is ideal for someone with strong analytical, critical-thinking, writing, and case-management skills who is comfortable reviewing complex information and making objective decisions.

Your role in our mission:

  • Review and analyze medical, psychological, vocational, and other evidentiary records to evaluate initial disability claims and reach well-supported conclusions.
  • Learn and apply applicable Social Security laws, regulations, policies, medical criteria, and vocational factors when assessing impairment severity and disability eligibility.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and concise electronic case documentation, summaries, correspondence, and explanations supporting adjudication decisions.
  • Independently manage an increasing caseload while meeting established standards for accuracy, productivity, timeliness, and quality.
  • Communicate professionally with claimants and other stakeholders, research and resolve case-related issues, and effectively manage changing priorities and complex situations.

What we're looking for:

  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and analyze complex written information, including medical, psychological, vocational, legal, or other detailed records and data.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, disease processes, diagnostic testing, healthcare, disability services, claims, or related fields is preferred.
  • Excellent critical-thinking, research, problem-solving, and objective decision-making skills, with the ability to draw conclusions from information obtained from multiple sources.
  • Strong professional writing and communication skills, including the ability to clearly document findings, summarize complex information, and communicate effectively by telephone.
  • Strong computer and keyboarding skills with the ability to learn electronic case-management applications, independently manage multiple complex tasks, and maintain confidentiality in accordance with applicable privacy and HIPAA requirements.

What you should expect in this role:

This is a full-time, on-site position in Madison, Wisconsin, with an anticipated start date of November 16, 2026. New hires will participate in approximately 20 weeks of comprehensive classroom training, followed by progressive on-the-job training and increasing independence. The position requires extensive reading and analysis of electronic medical and evidentiary records and significant computer-based case documentation. You will independently manage an increasing disability caseload and have regular telephone contact with claimants while working in an environment with changing policies, procedures, and priorities. Eligible employees have access to Gainwell benefits including medical, dental and vision coverage, a 401(k) retirement savings plan, paid time off, and wellness and financial programs, subject to eligibility.

The pay range for this position is $43,400 - $62,000 per year, however, the base pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.
