Controller - Custom Home Builder
Location: Gilbert, AZ
Salary: $135,000–$155,000 DOE
Schedule: Full-Time, In-Office
About the Role
A growing custom home builder in the Queen Creek area is looking for a Controller to take ownership of the company's accounting and financial operations. This is a hands-on position for someone who understands construction accounting, job costing, financial reporting, and cash flow and can bring structure, accuracy, and accountability to a growing organization.
The Controller will work closely with ownership, project teams, vendors, and external accounting partners to ensure the company's financials are accurate, timely, and providing the information needed to make sound business decisions.
What You'll Do
Financial & Construction Accounting
Own day-to-day accounting operations, including AP, AR, invoice coding, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
Oversee job costing, including billed and unbilled costs, job cost summaries, and project-level financial reporting.
Prepare and review monthly P&L, Balance Sheet, Budget vs. Actual, and Overhead Budget vs. Actual reports.
Monitor project costs and help identify discrepancies, billing issues, and potential financial risks.
Prepare and manage monthly client draws to support project cash flow.
Maintain accurate and timely financial records across active construction projects.
AP, Vendor & Compliance Management
Review and code invoices and ensure expenses are assigned to the appropriate projects and cost categories.
Manage weekly vendor payment processes and check runs according to payment terms.
Ensure vendors and subcontractors have current W-9s, Certificates of Insurance, subcontractor agreements, POs, and other required documentation before payment.
Reconcile vendor accounts and resolve discrepancies.
Coordinate annual insurance audits.
Monthly & Annual Close
Complete monthly bank, credit card, and vendor reconciliations.
Prepare monthly financial reports and supporting schedules.
Prepare check run, bank reconciliation, credit card, and uncleared transaction reports.
Coordinate year-end close and provide accurate books and documentation to the company's CPA.
Prepare and issue annual 1099s.
What We're Looking For
5+ years of accounting experience
Experience in construction, homebuilding, or a closely related industry preferred
Strong understanding of job costing and construction accounting
Experience with AP, AR, reconciliations, financial reporting, and month-end close
Strong understanding of P&L, Balance Sheet, cash flow, and budget vs. actual reporting
Experience managing or reviewing project-level financial information
QuickBooks Online experience
Strong Excel and financial reporting skills
Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
MBA preferred
Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational and follow-through skills
Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of the accounting function
High level of integrity and discretion when handling sensitive financial information
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with owners, project managers, vendors, subcontractors, and outside accounting/CPA partners
