Job description

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Software Development Engineer (SDE-2) to design, build, and operate scalable software systems that power capacity management decisions across Amazon's outbound fulfillment network in PACMAN team under SCOT organization. In this role, you will be responsible for developing robust, production-grade services that surface capacity utilization trends, detect risk patterns in real time.

The Amazon Supply Chain Optimization Technologies (SCOT) team works on some of the world's most complex supply chain challenges, at Amazon scale. Within SCOT, the Fulfillment Optimization (FO) organization owns products and services that plan and execute orders for the outbound network worldwide — from designing network topology to providing accurate customer promises and selecting optimal fulfillment paths.

What we're looking for:
- Strong foundations in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
- Experience with or passion for: Algorithms, optimizations, and generative AI.
- Ability to break down ambiguous, complex problems into elegant, shippable solutions
- Comfort operating in a fast-paced environment where you own your systems end-to-end
- Excellent communication skills and a track record of raising the engineering bar on your team

Key job responsibilities
- Design and implement software solutions across major portions of your team's systems, balancing new feature development with refactoring and operational improvements to maintain long-term code health.
- Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, and cross-functional peers to understand business requirements and deliver the right solutions, ensuring alignment between customer needs and technical direction.
- Participate actively in the full software development lifecycle, including system design, code reviews, testing, deployment, and production operations, while applying sound judgment on data structures, algorithms, and architectural trade-offs.
- Mentor and coach other engineers through code reviews and knowledge sharing, producing clear documentation so that your software can be maintained and extended by those unfamiliar with the codebase.
- Identify root causes of operational issues and drive permanent fixes, continuously improving your team's processes, reliability, and overall software quality.

A day in the life

- Collaborate with Engineering, Science, and Product teams to design and implement new capacity tracking features — owning the technical architecture from high-level design through deployment, testing and including data pipeline construction for capacity ingestion and consumption.
- Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs that power the end-to-end lifecycle of capacity tracking: from initial configuration by resource owners, through real-time consumption tracking, to detection and risk notification — ensuring low latency, high availability, and data accuracy.
- Own and improve systems that detect discrepancies between expected and actual capacity utilization across outbound resources (sort centers, delivery stations, fulfillment centers) — building automated alerting, self-healing mechanisms, and diagnostic tooling to surface and resolve mismatches proactively using generative AI.
- Partner with capacity resource owners and FO decision-system teams to translate new data requirements and into technical specifications, leading design reviews and driving implementation across the service stack.
- Investigate and resolve production issues — by performing root-cause analysis, authoring corrections of errors (COEs), and driving operational improvements to prevent recurrence.
- Ensure peak event readiness (Prime Day, holiday season) by conducting performance and load testing, identifying and mitigating system bottlenecks, hardening capacity data services for throughput spikes, and participating in operational readiness reviews (ORRs) to guarantee timely and accurate risk signals at scale.

About the team
The PACMAN (Persistence And Capacity Management) team serves as the centralized authority for capacity availability across all of Amazon's physical outbound resources. Accurate, granular, and real-time capacity tracking is foundational for FO planning and execution systems to effectively utilize first and third party resources. From generating reliable network flow plans to providing accurate customer promises on the website and selecting optimal fulfillment paths for customer shipments, capacity information is a critical input at every step of fulfillment decision making.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
- 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
- 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
