Academic Program Manager

This position oversees and coordinates visible, complex, research grant programs/initiatives, professional and public education/outreach activities, and training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students and staff through subordinate supervisors, faculty, and other staff. The research portfolio contains topics related to firearm violence, social determinants of health, and the risk of firearm-related harm, political violence, and similar domains. It is responsible for the accountability and stewardship of human, financial, and physical resources in compliance with sponsor, departmental, and organizational goals and objectives. It is also responsible for supporting Centers-wide strategic planning and leading the implementation of projects that are critical to the mission of the Centers for Violence Prevention.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduate degree in public health, business administration, or related field.
• 10-15+ years of experience as a Supervisor in an academic or research setting or an equivalent combination of such education and experience.
• Experience simultaneously managing multiple competing priorities and projects.
• Experience managing interdisciplinary teams.
• Experience in team building, mentoring, and conflict resolution.
• Demonstrated ability to build and support appropriate organizational structures, manage multiple concurrent responsibilities, and meet deadlines.
• Excellent leadership skills and ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary group of physicians, researchers, staff, and internal and external colleagues.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent critical thinking skills and strategic planning skills and experience.
• Ability to anticipate problems and challenges and proactively adapt.
• Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts and manage sensitive situations with discretion.
• High level of attention to detail and accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certified Research Administrator or equivalent training/education.
• Experience working on policy and legislative efforts and related projects.
• Experience working on community engagement efforts.
• Experience providing pre- and post-award support in higher education for investigator-initiated research studies or an equivalent combination of such education and experience.
• Experience in financial reporting in an academic environment for contracts and grants, private sponsors, and endowment funding.
• Working knowledge of policies, procedures, and regulations regarding cost accounting, supply chain, travel, intellectual property, conflict of interest requirements, publication rights, and/or protection of human subjects, preferably within the UCD or UCD Health context.
• Experience preparing, managing, and analyzing complex operational budgets with multiple funding streams and varying project periods.
• Experience preparing, submitting, and managing research grants from different funding sources.
• Working knowledge of various University of California systems including Aggie Enterprise, UC Path, Cayuse; and proposal submission portals for federal, state, and private sponsors.
• Ability to be convinced of opposing ideas by listening and processing alternative suggestions.

Department Overview:

The Centers for Violence Prevention (CVP) at UC Davis, an internationally-recognized leader in research on the public health approach to violence, is seeking an outstanding administrative manager to serve as an Academic Program Manager for a multi-disciplinary research and public education/outreach program that houses eight faculty, five research administration and research communications staff, and 14 research data analysts, as well as postdoctoral scholars and students. CVP comprises the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program, founded more than 35 years ago, and the California Firearm Violence Research Center, the nation's first publicly funded center for research in that field. Our continuing mission is to develop and disseminate the scientific evidence on which informed violence prevention policy and practice are based. CVP is a multidisciplinary, collaborative effort with multiple independent investigators. Our research spans a wide array of topics and study designs. Our status as a reliable source for rigorous research and our location in Sacramento increase our ability to translate findings into practice and public policy.
