Senior Accounting Manager

The Senior Accounting Manager is a key leader within the Finance team, responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong accounting controls, effective and efficient close processes, and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). This role provides hands-on leadership for complex accounting operations supporting The Permanente Federation and related entities. This role leads close and financial reporting activities, strengthens internal controls, oversees treasury and investment accounting, and partners with leaders across the organization to deliver accurate, timely, and decision-useful financial information. The manager also develops team capability, improves accounting processes and systems, and supports audit, tax, compliance, and planning activities. The Senior Accounting Manager also manages accounting staff and serves as a trusted partner to internal and external stakeholders.

Accounting Leadership & Financial Reporting

Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting including leading the close calendar, statement-review meetings, account reconciliations, and approval of journal entries.

Research and resolve complex accounting issues and transactions, including preparation and analysis of financial statements, management reports, allocations, accruals, and other routine and complex accounting schedules.

Apply GAAP and internal accounting policies to financial reporting and decision support.

Provide timely variance analysis, account reconciliations, and ad hoc financial reporting to support management decisions.

Maintain shared-expense, tax, benefit, pension, and other allocation methodologies and related accounting entries.

Treasury and Investments

Oversee banking and treasury activities, including wires, account transfers, cash management, forecasting, and backup support for daily cash and bank transactions.

Manage investment accounting activities, including capital calls, distributions, valuation/mark-to-market entries, partner reporting, audit schedules, and capital rollforwards.

Coordinate with internal stakeholders, investment firms, and external service providers to obtain complete and accurate transaction support.

Controls, Compliance & Audit & Taxes

Apply GAAP and established accounting policies to meet financial reporting, audit, regulatory, and management-reporting requirements.

Maintain effective accounting controls and support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements, internal policies, and SOX-related controls.

Lead or support internal and external audits, including coordination of schedules, explanations, and Third-Party Administrator data.

Develop, maintain, and communicate financial policies and procedures, including expense-report and signature-authority guidance.

Coordinate preparation and review of property, local business, and other required tax returns; partner with tax preparers and designated signers to support accurate and timely filings.

Protect confidential financial and business information and promote disciplined documentation and recordkeeping.

Finance Operations & Process Improvement

Supervise and develop accounting staff; provide work direction, coaching, review, and technical guidance across accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash, reconciliations, expense reporting, and other assigned processes.

Build effective relationships with finance colleagues, business leaders, auditors, vendors, Permanente Medical Group partners, health plan partners, and other internal and external stakeholders.

Partner with TPF leaders on budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, variance analysis, and other financial planning activities.

Lead improvements to accounting processes, systems, procedures, forms, and manuals; identify opportunities to strengthen efficiency, accuracy, and controls.

Collaborate with Information Technology and system partners to resolve issues affecting finance operations and reporting.

Complete special projects and other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in accounting, business administration, economics, finance, or a related field.

Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.

Seven (7) or more years of progressive accounting or finance experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, general ledger accounting, accounts payable, internal controls, and financial planning and analysis.

Strong analytical problem-solving, project-management, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to prioritize competing deadlines, adapt to changing business needs, and work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Experience in health care, a complex multi-entity environment, or another highly regulated industry.
