General Statement (Summary of duties and responsibilities):
The Tissue Recovery Coordinator (TRC) is responsible for coordinating the tissue donation process, including referral, scheduling, recovery and shipment of recovered tissues, Assists with tissue supply management and other tissue departmental related duties. Assists with professional and public education programming (as needed) and maintains a positive, professional liaison between MORA Tissue Services and the medical/civic community. On-call and weekend responsibilities are required.
Essential Job Functions:
Evaluates referrals for tissue donation. Reviews medical history or chart information to determine suitability of donors. Coordinates procurement activities with hospitals, medical examiner’s office and other recovery agencies.
Coordinates the tissue donation process.
Assembles recovery team and arranges transportation, if needed.
Evaluates and determines donor suitability, based on medical chart review, history assessment, and astute physical assessment of the body.
Oversees operating room setup, maintenance of the sterile environment, room break-down and decontamination.
Obtains or secures blood and/or tissue samples from each donor for the purpose of serological testing and screening.
Engages in or supervises part-time staff in the preparation of donor sites and aseptic procurement, culturing and packaging of musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and/or research tissue grafts.
Ensures accurate and complete documentation of all phases of donation.
Conducts family and staff follow-up as needed.
Participates in training of junior tissue bank staff.
Represents MORA Tissue Services throughout the medical and civic community for the purposes of public and professional education. Assists in the preparation of materials for public and professional education involving tissue banking.
Performs other related duties as directed or required.
Participates in internal professional development activities.
Physical Environment/Working Conditions:
Travel:
The TRC is required to travel by automobile, commercial aircraft and light charter aircraft in order to meet all duties and responsibilities of the position. Maintains a valid driver’s license and drives to and from hospitals and donor locations.
Environment:
The TRC may come in contact with bloodborne pathogens while directly supervising staff in hospital settings or on MORA property. Specific training is provided at the time of employment and annually. Standing, walking, bending, lifting (approximately 70 pounds), and carrying tissue. Observes, listens, and effectively communicates verbally and in writing.
Bachelor’s degree in life sciences or Business or Associate degree and completion of a Licensed Practical Nurse, Operating Room Technician, Mortician, or other life sciences program, plus two (2) years experience within the discipline. * At least one(1) year experience as a Recovery Team Leader or equivalent and two (2) years total tissue-banking experience. * Current AATB Certified Tissue Banking Specialist (CTBS) or able to sit for the exam within a year of securing the position.
