Director of Land Development

About the Role:

A well-established civil engineering and land development firm is seeking an experienced Director of Land Development to lead and expand its land development operations in Tucson, Arizona. This is an excellent opportunity for a senior civil engineering professional with 15+ years of relevant experience to oversee residential, commercial, and mixed-use development projects while leading engineering teams and driving business growth. The successful candidate will play a key role in strategic planning, project delivery, client relationship management, and team development, with opportunities for long-term career advancement and potential ownership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage, and expand the Land Development Division in the Tucson market and throughout Arizona.
  • Oversee residential, commercial, and mixed-use land development projects, ensuring successful delivery within established scope, schedule, budget, and performance requirements.
  • Serve as the primary client contact throughout the project lifecycle, providing technical guidance, project updates, and strategic recommendations.
  • Lead project teams by establishing clear expectations and maintaining high standards of technical quality, efficiency, and innovation.
  • Mentor, train, and develop civil engineering professionals while supporting performance management and career progression.
  • Provide strategic input on business development initiatives in collaboration with firm leadership.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with private developers, builders, landowners, architects, land use attorneys, planners, and public agencies.
  • Identify opportunities to secure new projects, strengthen existing client relationships, and generate repeat business.
  • Conduct constructability reviews and site construction conformance evaluations.
  • Monitor project progress and proactively address challenges related to design, scheduling, budgets, and client expectations.
  • Participate in relevant land development and professional organizations to strengthen industry relationships and support business growth.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and the continued growth of the firm's Arizona operations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Active Arizona Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Minimum of 15+ years of relevant experience managing land development projects.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, and managing civil engineering teams, including employee performance reviews and professional development.
  • Proven ability to direct design teams, establish project goals, develop plans, and make independent decisions.
  • Strong understanding of land development design, project management, constructability reviews, and construction conformance evaluations.
  • Established professional relationships with local developers, builders, architects, land use attorneys, planners, and public agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in business development, client management, new project acquisition, and repeat business generation.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Microsoft Project, and Bluebeam.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while balancing technical, financial, and client requirements.
  • Strong business acumen and a commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions.
