QA Automation Engineer (Software Engineer / Quality Assurance Analyst)

Location: Boston, MA
Duration: 12 Months
Work Arrangement: Hybrid — Onsite 3+ days per week

Job Summary

We are seeking a QA Automation Engineer (Software Engineer / Quality Assurance Analyst) to support an IT QA automation initiative focused on defining, evaluating, implementing, and supporting a scalable automation framework for Windows UI applications.

The role will collaborate closely with QA and application engineering teams to identify and implement automation tools and technologies that improve test execution, quality, efficiency, and overall QA processes. The automation framework will also be extended to support web-based applications and integrated with test management, tracking, reporting, and other development tools.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience implementing and supporting automation frameworks, particularly for Windows UI applications, along with hands-on experience scripting and automating tests for Windows and web applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to defining the technology stack, infrastructure design, and overall testing approach.
  • Support the scoping and specification of tool requirements for an effective and scalable automation framework.
  • Collaborate with QA and application engineering teams to advance automation strategies for the project.
  • Evaluate modular and scalable automation framework solutions for Windows UI applications, with extensibility to web UI applications.
  • Define and establish core automation framework components and integrations, including:
    • Test case management
    • Object repositories
    • Logging
    • Reporting
    • Data-driven testing
    • Configuration management
  • Evaluate automation tools and libraries and develop proof-of-concepts (POCs) and ROI analyses to identify the most effective technology stack.
  • Define tool adoption criteria, coding standards, and best practices for test design and implementation.
  • Develop reliable and maintainable functional, regression, and smoke test suites.
  • Implement parallel test execution strategies and optimize automation for speed, reliability, and stability.
  • Establish error-management strategies, deterministic test data practices, and environment controls.
  • Integrate automation with build pipelines and test management tools where applicable.
  • Automate test reporting and publish actionable quality metrics.
  • Partner with developers, QA analysts, and product owners to define testable requirements, acceptance criteria, and risk-based test coverage.
  • Extend the automation framework to support web UI testing using tools such as Selenium.
  • Evaluate tools and technologies for web load testing as an extension of the automation framework.
  • Enable unified reporting and artifact management across different test suite types.
  • Develop clear technical documentation, code samples, and onboarding materials.
  • Conduct training sessions for QA engineers and stakeholders.
  • Mentor team members and contribute to continuous QA improvement initiatives.
  • Deliver innovative testing solutions that improve efficiency, effectiveness, and overall QA processes.

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong experience implementing and supporting QA automation frameworks, particularly for Windows UI applications.
  • Hands-on experience developing and implementing UI automation for Windows and web applications.
  • Strong understanding of QA methodologies, best practices, strategies, tools, and metrics.
  • Experience testing SaaS and cloud-based applications, with a strong understanding of supporting infrastructure.
  • Programming or scripting experience with one or more of the following:
    • C#
    • .NET
    • JavaScript
    • Python
    • PowerShell
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases and ability to develop SQL queries.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.
  • Experience integrating automation with test management and tracking tools.
  • Experience with test reporting, logging, metrics, and artifact management.
  • Knowledge of scalable automation architecture, parallel execution, configuration management, and data-driven testing.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working with industry-specific ERP applications.
  • Experience with transit scheduling and operations management applications.
  • Experience with transit systems such as:
    • HASTUS
    • Trapeze FX
    • Trapeze OPS
  • Experience with web automation tools such as Selenium.
  • Experience with web load/performance testing tools.
  • Experience integrating automation frameworks with CI/CD or build pipelines.
  • Experience mentoring QA engineers and leading automation initiatives.

Collaboration & Team Development

  • Work collaboratively with QA, application engineering, development, and product teams.
  • Share knowledge and mentor team members on automation tools, frameworks, and best practices.
  • Promote consistent coding and test-design standards across automation efforts.
  • Help define and implement continuous improvement initiatives within QA.
  • Provide training and onboarding support to QA engineers and stakeholders.
