Job Summary

The Directional Drill Operator (HDD) is responsible for operating and maintaining horizontal directional drilling equipment to support underground utility and fiber optic construction projects. This role works closely with bore crews and utility locators to safely install conduit, fiber, and other underground infrastructure while ensuring compliance with safety standards and project specifications. Candidates should have experience operating drilling equipment, working on underground utility construction projects, and possess a valid CDL to transport equipment and materials as needed. Key responsibilities include interpreting utility locates, performing pre-trip equipment inspections, coordinating with field crews, and maintaining a safe and productive job site. This position requires strong knowledge of HDD operations, underground construction practices, and utility locating processes.

Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to)

  • Experience with Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and drill operations, supporting underground utility and fiber construction projects.
  • CDL operator experience working with bore crews, including equipment operation and job-site support.
  • Utility locating experience, identifying and marking underground facilities to ensure safe excavation and construction activities.
  • Familiar with underground construction environments, directional drilling processes, and coordination with field crews.

Required Qualifications

Education, Licensing, and Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • DOT Medical Card required.
  • Active Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A strongly desired.

Experience

  • Minimum one year of experience operating heavy equipment near active underground utilities.
  • Experience using utility locating equipment and operating asphalt rollers, skid steers, backhoes, mini excavators, vacuum trucks, directional bore machines, or similar construction equipment.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment in active construction environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and utility locate markings.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, ANSI standards, safe excavation practices, and underground utility locating systems.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment.
  • Experience with underground telecommunications or utility construction, trench safety, shoring systems, or additional heavy equipment certifications.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, climb, push, pull, twist, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and safely around heavy equipment and active construction sites while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
