Job description

Sterile Processing Technician

Location: Richmond, VA
Shift: 2nd Shift – 3:00 PM–11:30 PM
Additional Shift: 3rd Shift Available
Schedule: 5 days/week | Approximately 40 hours/week
Position Type: Contract-to-Permanent

Job Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented Sterile Processing Technician / Coordinator to support sterile processing operations and ensure the proper cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment.

The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of sterile processing standards, infection prevention practices, surgical instrumentation, and sterilization procedures. This role requires attention to detail and the ability to maintain high quality and safety standards in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate, clean, inspect, assemble, and package surgical instruments.
  • Operate washer-disinfectors, sterilizers/autoclaves, and other sterile processing equipment.
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, completeness, and damage.
  • Document sterilization cycles, instrument tracking, missing or damaged instruments, and inventory.
  • Process instruments and equipment in accordance with applicable ANSI/AAMI standards, manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFUs), and established SOPs.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas and equipment.
  • Follow established safety, infection control, quality, and sterile processing procedures.
  • Identify and communicate quality issues, equipment concerns, and processing discrepancies to appropriate personnel.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with departmental standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of sterile processing experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • CRCST or equivalent sterile processing certification required.
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments and sterile processing procedures, including:
    • Decontamination
    • Cleaning
    • Inspection
    • Assembly
    • Packaging
    • Sterilization
  • Strong understanding of infection prevention and sterile processing practices.
  • Ability to follow written procedures, manufacturer IFUs, SOPs, and established quality standards.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous quality control experience preferred.
  • Experience working with sterile processing tracking and inventory systems.
  • Familiarity with applicable sterile processing and infection control standards.

Schedule

  • 2nd Shift: 3:00 PM–11:30 PM
  • 3rd Shift: Also available
  • 5 days per week
  • Approximately 40 hours per week
