Race Car Aerodynamicist (CFD/HPC) — Stock Car Development
- Full-time
Own the airflow. Influence the finish.
We’re looking for a Race Car Aerodynamicist to lead computational aerodynamics for our stock car program in Welcome, NC. Your simulations will directly inform part design, setup choices, and race-week execution.
What success looks like
Picture this: It’s race week. You’ve just completed a suite of high-fidelity external aero studies covering yaw, pitch, roll, and steer. Your mesh strategy is robust, your solver selection is intentional, and your post-processing reveals a cleaner path to downforce with reduced drag. You brief aero, design, and vehicle dynamics—by Friday, parts are cut and the setup sheet changes. Sunday, the car is quicker.
Responsibilities
- Create and curate CFD-ready CAD geometry; develop meshing approaches that balance accuracy and computational cost.
- Run large-scale simulations on HPC resources; manage queues and troubleshoot performance bottlenecks.
- Analyze results to produce clear, prioritized recommendations tied to lap-time impact.
- Validate models through wind tunnel and track data correlation.
- Work shoulder-to-shoulder with OEM partners, aerodynamicists, design engineers, and vehicle dynamics to implement improvements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or similar field with a focus on fluid dynamics.
- 5+ years of CFD practice; motorsport experience preferred.
- Proficiency with ANSYS Fluent, Star-CCM+, or OpenFOAM, using DES, LES, and SST k-omega models.
- Strong grounding in vehicle aerodynamics and its effect on balance and handling.
- Comfort operating on a tight, race-driven schedule.
Preferred
- Master’s degree with emphasis on CFD or Experimental Aerodynamics.
- Experience in NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula 1, or other professional series.
- Knowledge of NASCAR aero regulations and limitations.
- Appreciation for the aero–mechanical grip relationship within vehicle dynamics.
