Manager, Environmental Health and Safety (Open)

Job Duties:
- Partner with operations leadership to integrate safety and compliance into daily business decisions and operating processes.
- Provide EHS guidance and technical support to Airgas facilities throughout the assigned geography, including production/fill plants, branches, distribution operations, and other specialized facilities.
- Conduct regular field visits, observations, assessments, and leadership engagements to identify hazards, operational risk, and opportunities for improvement.
- Guide and support investigations involving injuries, vehicle incidents, property damage, releases, fires, near misses, and other significant events.
- Ensure investigations identify underlying causes and organizational contributors and result in effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Monitor safety and compliance performance, identify trends, and develop targeted risk-reduction strategies.
- Support compliance with applicable OSHA, Cal/OSHA, DOT, EPA, state and local environmental requirements, and Airgas policies and procedures.
- Provide technical guidance related to industrial gas operations, material handling, powered industrial trucks, cylinder handling, driver safety, hazardous materials, emergency preparedness, and other operational risks.
- Support environmental compliance programs, including hazardous materials, hazardous waste, air, stormwater, and applicable local regulatory requirements.
- Ensure and facilitate timely completion and verification of corrective actions resulting from incidents, audits, inspections, and compliance assessments.
- Develop and deliver effective safety communications, training, stand-downs, and other engagement activities.
- Promote proactive reporting, learning from near misses and Good Catches, and meaningful associate involvement in risk reduction.
- Nurture and strengthen working relationships across Operations, Human Resources, Fleet, Distribution, Production, Quality, and other functional groups.
- Support regulatory inspections, agency inquiries, audits, and other compliance activities as necessary.
- Participate in regional EHS initiatives and continuously improve systems, processes, and tools that make safety and compliance more effective and sustainable.
Are You a Match?
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Demonstrated professional experience in environmental, health, safety, transportation, manufacturing, distribution, or industrial operations.
- Working knowledge of OSHA, Cal/OSHA and other applicable federal, state, and local EHS regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to investigate incidents, evaluate risk, identify root and contributing causes, and develop effective corrective actions.
- Strong leadership, communication, coaching, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to influence operational leaders and frontline associates without relying solely on positional authority.
- Ability and willingness to spend significant time in operating environments and engage directly with employees performing the work.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities across numerous locations.
- Ability to travel regularly throughout the assigned area and periodically elsewhere within the West Region.
- Applicants must have a valid driver's license.
- Candidates must have valid employment authorization in the U.S. and must not require visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous EHS leadership or people-management experience.
- Experience supporting multi-site manufacturing, distribution, transportation, chemical, industrial gas, or similarly regulated operations.
- Experience with DOT/FMCSA transportation safety and hazardous materials regulations.
- Professional certification such as CSP, ASP, CHMM, CIH, or equivalent.
- Experience working with California-specific environmental and occupational safety requirements.
Leadership Expectations:
- The successful EHS Manager will be expected to operate as a business partnernot simply a compliance resource. This individual should be comfortable moving between the field and the leadership table, challenging existing practices when necessary while maintaining strong relationships with operational stakeholders.
- Success requires visible leadership at the point of work, sound judgment, technical credibility, responsiveness, and a bias toward execution. The EHS Manager should focus not only on whether requirements are completed, but whether they are effective, understood, and sustained.

- Success in this role is demonstrated through reduced operational risk, strong regulatory compliance, timely and effective corrective actions, improved associate and leadership engagement, development of a high-performing EHS team, and safety processes that become embedded into normal business operations.
- The EHS Manager will help create an environment where safety is not treated as a separate program or a box to check, but as an integral component of operational excellence.
