Job description

Salary: $145,000 - 165,000 per year

Requirements:

  • Five or more years of professional web application development experience, or equivalent experience demonstrating senior-level judgment and independent problem-solving.
  • Strong production experience with PHP and Laravel.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript, jQuery, HTML, CSS, and responsive web interfaces.
  • Strong SQL and MySQL skills, including relational database design, joins, transactions, indexing, stored procedures, query optimization, and safe data handling.
  • Experience building and integrating APIs and implementing secure JWT-based authentication and authorization.
  • Working knowledge of Linux, cron, logging, shell scripting, SSH, and secure file transfer; familiarity with FTP and Telnet in legacy environments and their security limitations.
  • Practical web accessibility experience, including semantic HTML, keyboard navigation, focus management, accessible forms, and screen-reader testing.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, FERPA, GDPR, and relevant NIST security guidance, with experience translating applicable requirements into technical controls.
  • Strong understanding of internet privacy and application security, including access controls, encryption, input validation, audit logging, credential protection, and secure handling of sensitive information.
  • Familiarity with Windows PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, iPads, and other tablets, and with browser applications interaction with assistive technologies such as switches and AAC devices.
  • Working knowledge of web and network fundamentals, including HTTP/HTTPS, TLS, DNS, cookies, sessions, and common restrictions in school and healthcare networks.
  • Experience with Git or another version-control system.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, patience with people of varying technical abilities, and persistence in finding root causes.
  • A computer science or related degree is welcome but not required when supported by equivalent professional experience.
  • Preferred: experience integrating AI agents into company systems; supporting applications used by schools, hospitals, clinics, or other organizations handling sensitive information; knowledge of special education populations and disability-related user needs; hands-on testing with AAC devices, switch access, or other assistive technologies; maintaining existing applications while adding features; and experience with automated testing, deployment workflows, and application monitoring.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain, and improve web applications using PHP, Laravel, JavaScript, jQuery, HTML, and CSS.
  • Design and maintain MySQL databases; write and optimize SQL queries and stored procedures; and carry out controlled data updates, migrations, and troubleshooting.
  • Build, integrate, and troubleshoot APIs, including JWT-based authentication and authorization.
  • Investigate production problems by tracing user actions, code, API requests, database operations, scheduled jobs, and logs.
  • Handle routine Linux work, including cron configuration, log analysis, shell scripting, file permissions, and secure remote access.
  • Implement and test accessible interfaces against applicable WCAG requirements, targeting WCAG 2.2 Level AA.
  • Apply technical safeguards that support relevant HIPAA, FERPA, GDPR, and NIST obligations in collaboration with designated compliance and security stakeholders.
  • Test application behavior across browsers, operating systems, devices, and assistive technologies used in education and clinical environments.
  • Work with customer IT teams to diagnose connectivity, authentication, browser restriction, firewall, proxy, and content-filtering issues.
  • Explain findings, workarounds, and resolutions clearly and appropriately for each audience.
  • Write maintainable code, review code, create suitable tests, and document changes and troubleshooting procedures.
  • As part of the application process, provide a résumé and brief examples of a PHP/Laravel application developed or substantially maintained, a difficult application or database issue resolved, and experience with accessibility and sensitive-data protection. Describe your individual contributions without sharing confidential customer information or proprietary code.
