About Barber9nichols
Barber9Nichols (BN) designs and builds custom turbomachinery for defense, aerospace, cryogenics, and energy customers. We9re a high9performance, hands9on team that partners with equally elite clients to push boundaries and deliver mission9critical hardware. If you thrive in a fast, supportive, and achievement9oriented environment, you9ll feel at home here.
Day in the Life
You start your morning reviewing new part models and traveler priorities. By mid9morning, you9re deep in Siemens NX CAM crafting multi9axis toolpaths for lathe, mill, and mill9turn components99balancing metal removal efficiency with exacting tolerances. You simulate and verify each sequence, refine posts, and publish setup sheets and tool lists so machinists can run with confidence. After lunch, you collaborate with tooling vendors to fine9tune cutting strategies for Inconel and titanium, then huddle with quality and engineering to address a design tweak. You close the day mentoring a teammate through a complex prove9out, updating libraries and templates as you capture lessons learned for repeat production.
What You9ll Own
- Independently program complex lathe, mill, and mill9turn parts in Siemens NX CAM, delivering clear setup and run instructions that prioritize accuracy, repeatability, and throughput.
- Run full process verification and machine simulation prior to release; maintain and refine CAM post processors, tooling libraries, templates, setup documentation, and tool lists.
- Standardize cutting methods, strategies, speeds/feeds, and workholding across product families based on machine capability, material behavior, and tolerance bands.
- Interpret drawings, GD&T, specifications, and model data to determine machining approach and inspection considerations; select cutting tools and partner with suppliers to develop solutions for difficult materials.
- Lead production readiness reviews for complex/high9risk work; ensure programs, fixtures, simulations, and tooling are ready ahead of schedule and support new equipment/process introductions.
- Mentor programmers and machinists; provide advanced troubleshooting and incorporate shop feedback to elevate quality, consistency, and cycle time.
- Collaborate with engineering, program management, and quality on design for manufacturability, nonconformance resolution, immediate rework, and long9term corrective actions. Implement approved design changes and update standards, posts, and libraries accordingly.
- Champion safe programming practices and clear setups; identify and lead safety improvements within products, cells, and departmental methods.
- Embed QMS requirements in everyday work: follow procedures, recommend updates, and support training to sustain compliance.
Qualifications
- Education/Training: Associate9s degree in manufacturing technology, CNC programming certification, or related technical training preferred; equivalent machining/setup/operation/programming experience considered.
- Experience: 10+ years programming precision parts of varied complexity for lathes, mills, and mill9turn using advanced CAM (Siemens NX CAM preferred). Extensive work with tight tolerances and hard9to9machine materials (e.g., Inconel, titanium, stainless).
- Other: Advanced GD&T; strong understanding of good manufacturing practices and ISO standards; proven ability to set up, run, and support prove9outs of complex jobs; willingness to work overtime as required.
Preferred Background
- AS9100 and ISO9001 environment experience.
- Full9spectrum programming across mill, lathe, and mill9turn.
- Depth in Siemens NX CAM: advanced toolpath creation, post processor development, tooling libraries, and full machine simulation.
- History of mentoring and leading complex troubleshooting; contributions to new equipment/process deployments.
- Documented impact improving processes, programming standards, tooling libraries, setup documentation, or machining strategies.
Skills That Set You Apart
- Commitment to company, client, and regulatory safety programs and policies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; strong organization and time management.
- Meticulous attention to detail with the ability to plan and deliver to schedule.
- Analytical problem solver who leads advanced troubleshooting and drives effective solutions.
- Values9driven, self9directed mentor and continuous improvement advocate in a team environment.
- Adaptable to shifting priorities, products, machines, and requirements while maintaining strong documentation, communication, and process control.
