About the Opportunity
We are partnering with a rapidly growing, technology-driven mortgage infrastructure company seeking a Controller to build and lead its accounting function. This is an opportunity to work directly with the CFO, establish accounting policies and processes, and help shape the financial operations of an innovative company transforming the mortgage industry.
The ideal candidate brings strong, hands-on mortgage accounting expertise, a deep understanding of GAAP, and the ability to build scalable accounting processes in a fast-moving environment. This role combines traditional controllership responsibilities with complex mortgage accounting, financial systems implementation, and AI-driven automation.
As the company continues to grow, this position offers the opportunity to expand into broader finance leadership, including building and managing an accounting team.
Key Responsibilities
- Own all aspects of the accounting function, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, accruals, reconciliations, and monthly financial close.
- Manage mortgage loan-level accounting throughout the origination and settlement lifecycle, including funding reconciliations, warehouse line activity, gain-on-sale accounting, and investor settlements.
- Establish accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to support accurate financial reporting and GAAP compliance.
- Drive improvements to the monthly close process, reducing manual work and improving efficiency.
- Partner directly with the CFO on financial reporting, audit preparation, and strategic accounting initiatives.
- Develop and maintain internal controls and documentation supporting SOC 1 Type II reporting.
- Lead the implementation of a modern accounting platform, including migration from QuickBooks to Campfire.
- Identify opportunities to leverage AI, automation, and modern financial technology across accounting workflows.
- Prepare accurate financial reports and supporting documentation for executive leadership, board members, lenders, and other stakeholders.
- Collaborate with operations, lending, and technology teams to ensure accurate financial data across business systems.
- Help build and eventually lead the accounting team as the organization scales.
Qualifications
- Strong accounting and controllership background, with at least 3 years of direct mortgage lending accounting experience.
- Hands-on experience with operational mortgage or structured credit accounting, including areas such as loan origination, securitization, mortgage servicing rights (MSRs), or hedge accounting.
- Experience managing full-cycle AP/AR, general ledger accounting, accruals, reconciliations, and monthly close.
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
- Experience independently owning accounting close processes, financial audits, or accounting systems implementations.
- Ability to develop accounting policies, improve internal controls, and establish scalable financial processes.
- Strong technical aptitude and interest in leveraging AI and automation to improve accounting operations.
- Ability to operate independently, solve complex accounting problems, and work effectively with senior leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with a mortgage lender, mortgage servicing organization, fintech company, or mortgage technology platform.
