Job Title: Quality Control Laboratory Technician
Shift: 2-2-3 schedule (5PM to 5AM) and will train on 8 hour day shift for 3-4 weeks prior to moving to 12-hour shift.
Job Description
This role is a hands-on, chemistry-focused Quality Control Laboratory Technician position within a large chemical processing facility. You will perform routine and specialized chemical analyses to support production quality, using a variety of laboratory instruments and following established procedures and documentation standards. The position offers the opportunity to grow within the Quality Department and potentially transition into research and development roles over time.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily quality control testing and chemical analyses on production samples using standard laboratory equipment and specialized instrumentation.
- Operate and maintain advanced analytical instruments such as thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry platforms, capillary rheometers, melt indexers, gas chromatographs (GC), and high performance liquid chromatographs (HPLC).
- Conduct wet chemistry procedures, pH measurements, viscosity checks, and other routine assays to ensure products meet established specifications.
- Accurately record test results on batch sheets and enter data into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) when required.
- Follow Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all testing and documentation activities.
- Work in accordance with quality standards in an ISO-certified facility, ensuring compliance with internal and external quality requirements.
- Troubleshoot basic instrument and testing issues, and escalate complex problems to technical staff as needed.
- Communicate test findings clearly and promptly to production and quality teams to support timely decision-making.
- Collaborate with technical staff on the night shift, asking questions and seeking guidance to resolve technical or procedural issues.
- Maintain a safe and organized laboratory workspace while working with chemical products and processing materials.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Chemistry; other scientific degrees may be considered when combined with prior chemical manufacturing experience.
- 13 years of experience working in a laboratory setting, preferably within industry.
- 13 years of hands-on experience with Gas Chromatography (GC) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
- Demonstrated proficiency with standard chemical laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Experience performing chemical analysis and wet chemistry techniques in a quality control environment.
- Ability to follow and apply GMP/GLP documentation practices in daily work.
- Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the ability to adhere to them consistently.
- Familiarity with working in an ISO-certified facility.
- Strong troubleshooting abilities related to laboratory tests and instrumentation.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in recording and reporting test results.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is a plus.
- Experience in chromatography, including GC and HPLC, and related analytical methods.
- Experience with thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry is beneficial.
- Exposure to capillary rheometry, melt indexers, and viscosity measurements is advantageous.
- Previous industry laboratory experience is preferred over purely academic or non-laboratory backgrounds.
- Ability to work effectively on a night shift schedule and adapt to a rotating 2-2-3 shift pattern.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with technical staff and production personnel.
- Interest in long-term career growth within quality control and potential progression into research and development roles.
Work Environment
This position is based in a large specialty chemicals manufacturing facility on a substantial industrial site. You will work primarily in a laboratory setting that is closely integrated with production areas and deals directly with chemical products. The environment is more industrial than pharmaceutical, and the lab and production spaces are not highly cleanroom-style; candidates should be comfortable working in a setting where surfaces and equipment may be exposed to process materials. The facility operates under ISO certification and emphasizes structured procedures, documentation, and quality-focused culture, offering stability and opportunities for advancement for high-performing laboratory technicians.
