This role works closely with construction teams and financial leadership to maintain accurate project costs, resolve accounting issues, and provide reliable financial information. The ideal candidate takes initiative, manages competing deadlines, and enjoys improving processes.

Key Responsibilities

Construction and Project Accounting

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports related to capital planning, job costs, debt, construction in progress, and other financial activities.
  • Serve as the primary accounting contact for the construction team, researching and resolving questions involving job costs, percentage of completion, billing, and projected expenditures.
  • Review project transactions to ensure costs are assigned to the correct project, cost code, phase, and general ledger account.
  • Monitor projects from initial setup through completion, including transferring completed project costs to the appropriate fixed asset accounts.
  • Maintain accurate accounting classifications as projects move from predevelopment into construction.
  • Record project manager time, equipment charges, and trailer costs in the accounting system.
  • Prepare, review, and oversee customer and construction project billings.
  • Prepare construction loan draw requests and monthly or quarterly escrow draw requests.
  • Calculate and review percentage of completion for accuracy.

Month-End Close and Financial Reporting

  • Play a key role in month-end close, preparing and reviewing account reconciliations and supporting entries.
  • Reconcile accounts related to notes payable, accounts receivable, escrows, prepaid loan fees, predevelopment costs, construction in progress, investments, life insurance cash surrender values, intercompany activity, and income tax liabilities.
  • Prepare accounting entries related to multifamily properties and other business activities as needed.
  • Partner with accounts payable leadership to research and correct general ledger issues, particularly intercompany transactions.
  • Support the annual external audit by preparing schedules, documentation, and responses to auditor requests.

Loan Administration and Financial Documentation

  • Maintain bank account records and supporting documentation for financial operations and loan administration.
  • Maintain loan agreements, amortization schedules, debt ledgers, and related financial records.
  • Establish automatic loan payments and ensure payments are made on time and recorded accurately.
  • Maintain life insurance policy records, coordinate premium payments, and ensure accurate accounting treatment.
  • Coordinate with financial leadership and external tax advisors to address inquiries and resolve issues with tax jurisdictions.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Participate in financial systems initiatives, including ERP implementation and related process improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required; CPA designation is a plus.
  • At least 4–5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in construction or general contracting.
  • Experience with job costing and project accounting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including XLOOKUP, SUMIF, and pivot tables.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with construction accounting, property management, or project management software preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail when entering, reviewing, and reconciling financial information.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a professional, collaborative approach.
