Job description

Job Summary

Effective May 21, 2024, the City Council approved a title change from Child Care Counselor to Recreation Counselor.
Part-time Hourly - Work hours typically will not exceed 19 hours a week. Maximum yearly limit is 999 work hours in a fiscal year (July-June).
Part-time Regular - Work hours will be 25 hours or more per week.

We are hiring immediately for 5Part-time Hourly vacancies and 7 Part-time Regular vacancies. All part-time, temporary, and seasonal workers are at-will employees.

Per the Part-time Memorandum of Understanding (MOU):
  • Part-time Hourly employees are eligible for retirement benefits.
  • Part-time Regular employees are eligible for health and retirement benefits.

What We Do
Community Services Department provides exceptional recreational, educational, cultural, and social services to the community to enhance and maintain a high quality of life in Beverly Hills. The Department is comprised of two key areas: Recreation and Parks, and the Library. The Recreation and Parks Division is responsible for providing recreation and enrichment programs for all ages, parks and community center programming and management, and community events, sports and aquatics activities. The Division also manages the Joint Powers Agreement with the Beverly Hills Unified School District and operates the historic Greystone Mansion and Estate. The Division maintains diverse and innovative recreation and cultural programming and services for the community.

Job Summary:

To plan and implement recreational activities for youth, and to provide technical support to an assigned supervisor. This is the journey level in the single level, part-time Recreation Counselor technical class. Receives general supervision from an assigned supervisor.

Major Duties

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Supervise youth ages 18 and under; maintain attendance records.
  • Plan and implement daily activity plans.
  • Prepare and serve snacks; monitor lunchtime activities.
  • Chaperone off-site field trips.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Monitor and inventory supplies and equipment.
  • Depending upon assignment, may coordinate sports and games, art activities, dance activities, music lessons, edit scripts, stage productions, or related recreation program plans.
  • Provide homework assistance.
  • Facilitates parent communication and response to concerns.
  • Work department-related special events and programs as needed.
  • Assist new or existing staff in learning departmental practices and protocols, methods and procedures.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect.
  • Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and communication.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:
One year of paid recreation or teaching experience.

Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by 6 units of college course work in a related field.

License and Certificate
Possession of, or ability to obtain, valid CPR and First Aid certification within 1 year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and techniques of child development.
  • Methods of instruction in theater, art, music, dance or sports.

Ability to:
  • Plan, organize, and lead age-appropriate activities.
  • Prepare lesson plans for youth.
  • Use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority.
  • Operate and use modern office equipment including computers and applicable software.
  • Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
  • Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to, on a continuous basis, sit or stand for long periods of time; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone; write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; and lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less.
