Mercer University is searching for a Staff Counselor on the Atlanta, Georgia campus.

Responsibilities:

The Staff Counselor supports the overall mission of Counseling and Psychological Services through the provision of individual, group, and programmatic services, including outreach activities that serve a highly diverse student population enrolled across an expanding array of academic programs. This position provides crisis and consultation services, as needed, and takes turns on rotation for on-call crisis response, including after-hours. The Staff Counselor actively participates within the Division of Student Affairs and is a visible participant within the University community, including as potential liaison to academic partners. The Staff Counselor supports marketing initiatives as well as social media platforms and may participate in the the administrative and clinical supervision of practicum/internship students, when appropriate.

Duties include:

  • Provide counseling and psychotherapy, including consultation and assessment for students seeking services. Provide case management and referrals, as needed; provide therapeutic crisis intervention and emergency services during and after regular hours, as needed.

  • Document clinical practice consistent with professional standards and ensure that clinical notes, client correspondence, and related records are processed in a timely manner. Utilize treatment planning to support effective therapeutic outcomes.

  • Perform administrative duties that support the overall functioning of the CAPS office including but not limited to participation in staff meetings, assessment and outcome reporting, marketing initiatives, social media support, as well as collaborating with colleagues in updating policies and procedures; other routine and seasonal duties, as needed.

  • Actively engage in CAPS' outreach initiatives, including developing and presenting programs and serving as liaison with identified colleges, departments and student organizations. Consult with other professionals, as well as Mercer community members (students, staff, faculty, and administrators). Education and prevention may focus on suicide/self harm, alcohol and drugs, sexual assault, professional identity development, or other concerns identified on the Atlanta Campus and our surrounding service area.

  • Maintain professional development by attending workshops and conferences on counseling approaches, research, and areas of interest that address existing and emerging clinical needs of students on the Atlanta Campus; emphasis includes best practices for therapy overall along with brief therapy models, Telemental Health Counseling, and crisis response. Membership in appropriate professional organizations is encouraged.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in counseling, marriage & family therapy, or social work; or Ph.D or Psy.D clinical or counseling psychology

  • Licensed as a LPC, LMFT, or LCSW, or Psychologist in the State of Georgia, or relevant Associate License in Georgia and eligible for full, unrestricted licensure within the state of Georgia within 6 months of start date. Persons not licensed in Georgia may be considered provided they are fully licensed in another state and able to be licensed in Georgia within 3 months of start date.

  • One (1) year post-masters experience in provision of professional counseling or comparable professional services.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Understanding of both clinical and developmental issues confronting university students and ability to implement comprehensive services to address these issues

  • Understanding and competency for conducting individual psychotherapy with a diverse population

  • Ability to establish rapport quickly with clients within a therapeutic context

  • Ability to provide crisis intervention to assist students and facilitate on-call crisis response

  • Excellent judgment, problem solving, sophistication in thought and applicable knowledge of the myriad of factors leading to the resolution of psychological problems

  • Proficiency in public speaking and leading group discussions

  • Excellent written, verbal, administrative, and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent planning and organizational skills (e.g. file management, time management)

  • Knowledge and ability to interpret and apply professional standards & relevant laws for counseling centers

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality within legal and institutional guidelines

  • Familiarity with university policies and procedures, student issues and concerns, and campus issues
