Job description

Position Overview

The Pipe Crew Superintendent is responsible for supervising daily field operations for underground utility and storm drainage crews, ensuring all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with project plans, specifications, and schedule requirements.

This role involves overseeing the installation of storm drain, sanitary sewer, and waterline systems, including structures such as manholes, inlets, junction boxes, and associated piping. The superintendent will lead, train, and coordinate field personnel while maintaining productivity, safety, and quality on site.

Candidates with an established pipe crew are strongly preferred. Having your own experienced crew ready to mobilize will be considered a significant advantage.

Key Responsibilities

Field Supervision

  • Direct and supervise all activities of the pipe crew - including operators, pipelayers, and laborers.

  • Plan daily work tasks, material deliveries, and equipment needs to meet production goals.

  • Oversee installation of RCP, HDPE, and PVC pipe systems, and related drainage structures.

  • Verify grades, alignments, and slopes using survey data, lasers, or GPS systems.

  • Ensure trench safety, proper shoring, and compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P.

  • Coordinate with project management, QC staff, and inspectors to resolve issues or discrepancies.

Safety & Compliance

  • Conduct daily safety meetings and enforce company and OSHA safety protocols.

  • Ensure all crew members use required PPE and follow hazard control procedures.

  • Maintain accurate daily reports of safety inspections, near misses, and incidents.

Quality & Documentation

  • Review project drawings, specifications, and submittals for accuracy and constructability.

  • Confirm all pipe materials, bedding, and backfill meet DDOT, NPS, or project specifications.

  • Work closely with the Quality Control Manager to verify proper compaction, alignment, and testing.

  • Complete and submit daily field reports, crew timesheets, and equipment logs.

Coordination & Leadership

  • Communicate effectively with the Project Manager, engineers, and subcontractors to maintain workflow.

  • Monitor progress, identify potential delays, and implement corrective actions to keep the project on schedule.

  • Lead by example - fostering a culture of safety, quality, and teamwork.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in heavy civil construction or underground utility installation.

  • Proven track record supervising pipe crews on municipal, DOT, or federal projects.

  • Strong understanding of storm, sewer, and waterline systems and related construction practices.

  • Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, blueprints, and grade sheets.

  • Experience coordinating with inspectors and QC personnel.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

  • Preference will be given to candidates who can provide their own experienced crew.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive hourly or salary rate (DOE).

  • Company vehicle or allowance (if applicable).

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance options.

  • 401(k)
