Are you so intimately familiar with Ruby that you don’t even get that old Kenny Rogers song stuck in your head anymore when you hear the name? (If you know the song, you’re welcome. If you’re going to check it out now, you’re also welcome). If so — if you’re a hard-bitten, self-starting software-engineer type — then we’ve got a great gig for you, as one of the big cable networks builds out its digital distribution capabilities in a large and serious way. When we look at this one, we see tons of growth and plenty of upside.

Nitty Gritty

We’ll get to the duty-specific stuff in just a moment. First, though, a word or two about where you’ll sit in the organization. See, as part of this small team, you’ll serve as a direct interface to the front-end team, to the product team, and to the product quality team. You’ll also have a great deal of interaction with the overseas group that has architectural ownership of the platform, which means that you’ll be a senior developer reporting directly to the CTO but will need to work with those folks as more of a partner. We suppose you can see why we bring this up : It calls for someone who is super-confident in their work, anything but collaboration-averse, and not hung up on matters of prestige, pecking orders, all that sort of thing. Someone whose work relationships are organic and stem from their natural abilities and positive personality traits.

So anyway. Your mission : To build elegant, fast, highly scalable, best-in-class Ruby API services for consumer apps running on more than a dozen platforms to generate and serve media assets to the masses, continuous delivery. Everything consumer-facing is covered by you, and all systems talk to the API for which you’re responsible. Working in an Agile environment, you’ll plan, develop and implement projects start to finish, leaning heavily on your front- and back-end developer colleagues for idea exchange. You’ll write clean, smart code using Cucumber and RSpec, and you’ll even be encouraged to dabble in edgier stuff like VR, AR and chatbots. This company really wants you to stretch yourself, to innovate and iterate like crazy, embracing the failure that’s inevitable when people push their limits, while still abhorring the prospect of sending bad code out the door.

When we said “hard-bitten” up top, we were referring to the fact that you actually have a degree in, like, computer science, that you bring a serious engineering / architectural perspective to the work. Certainly you’re up to speed on engineering best practices. For nearly five years now, you’ve been scaling Ruby in Agile production environments and have such tools and techniques at your immediate disposal as Elasticache, Lambda and SQS. You’ve done DevOps using Jenkins and AWS, and you know Git all through and through. You’ve written schemas. You’ve scaled back-end code. You have a lot of experience with working where the data resides. And security issues are always a part of your thinking.

Importantly, you’re a strong communicator and naturally inclined to collaborate. You’ve never found it hard to integrate yourself into an organization and have frankly been mystified by most people’s biases towards silos.
