Annual Salary: $37,058

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

Join our dedicated team at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board as a full-time Homeless Services Assistant. This role offers a unique opportunity to provide support services to the housing and homeless services team, who assist those facing mental illnesses and co-occurring substance use disorders who are or have been homeless. Working onsite, you will engage directly with clients, fostering relationships and contributing to their journey towards stability and independence.

ABOUT the role

The full-time Homeless Services Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the housing and homeless services team at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board. This position focuses on assisting individuals facing serious mental illnesses and co-occurring substance use disorders who are or have been homeless. Key responsibilities include providing transportation for clients to appointments, helping with daily living skills, and engaging them in recreational activities. The assistant will maintain accurate client records, ensuring that documentation is up-to-date and that quality assurance activities are performed diligently. In addition to supporting case managers and outreach workers, the assistant will offer supportive counseling and encouragement to clients, fostering a nurturing environment that promotes recovery and stability.

This role is essential in connecting clients with vital resources and services, thereby enhancing their quality of life and aiding their journey toward independence.

Requirements

To thrive as a full-time Homeless Services Assistant at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, candidates must possess a blend of educational background and practical experience.

To qualify for this position, candidates must have the following:

  • Associates Degree in Human Services and six (6) months experience or two (2) years substance use or mental health related experience.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Additionally, proficiency in using computers and office equipment is required, along with a strong understanding of community and agency resources for homeless individuals dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues. The ability to maintain productive relationships with colleagues and representatives from various public and private organizations is crucial. Strong oral and written communication skills, alongside a holistic approach to addressing service needs, will further enhance success in this rewarding role.
