Job Description
Location: Berkeley, CA (onsite strongly preferred; can be remote during contract period if open to relocating at end of contract)
Duration: 06+ months contract to hire (extension and/or conversion possible based on performance)
Interview Process: 2 steps
Why It’s Open:
New QMU project is ramping and timeline is aggressive.
Team is behind schedule and internal resources have been reallocated.
Immediate need for schematic capture ownership + layout oversight to recover schedule.
This is a high-impact, execution-focused role with tight turnaround.
Mission/Project Overview:
Form Energy’s Electrical Engineering team is seeking immediate PCBA support for the QMU (Quad Management Unit), leveraging prior AMU/ZMU designs while adapting to updated system requirements. The QMU board enables power distribution, actuator control, sensor interfacing, and safety-compliant communication within Form’s battery energy storage system.
Core Responsibilities:
Own schematic capture in Altium (leveraging existing AMU/ZMU architecture).
Provide PCB layout oversight (signal integrity, power integrity, DFM considerations).
Support board bring-up and validation.
Ensure compliance with safety and industrial standards.
Partner cross-functionally with firmware, systems, and hardware teams.
Operate independently in a fast-paced, schedule-driven environment.
Technical Scope:
Design Functions
Power to and control of actuators, fans, and sensors
Power to and communication with downstream electronics
Safety-compliant communication pathway between quad skid and pack system
Communication Interfaces:
1Gbps (1000BASE-T1) Single Pair Ethernet
CAN-FD
SPI / UART / isoSPI / I2C / JTAG
Critical Components:
Compute: MCU (LQFP), MPU SOM (SMARC carrier)
Ethernet: Switch (196-pin BGA, 0.8mm pitch), PHYs
Power: 48V input, 24V/5V buck converters, 3V3/1V8/1V1 LDOs
Peripherals: IO expanders, ADCs, DACs, motor drivers, high-side drivers
Must-Haves:
5+ years electrical design experience (10+ preferred)
BS/MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering
Strong Altium experience
Schematic capture ownership experience
PCB layout experience (multi-layer boards, controlled impedance preferred)
Experience with:
48V power systems
High-speed Ethernet (1000BASE-T1 highly important)
CAN-FD
Data acquisition and control systems
Board bring-up + full product development lifecycle exposure
Strong understanding of safety/compliance in high-power or chemical environments
Familiarity with UL standards: UL1998, UL1973, UL9540, UL991
Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
Nice-to-Haves:
10+ years of experience
Energy storage / EV / automotive / industrial background
Experience with SOM/smart carrier interfaces
Deep hands-on PCB layout execution (not just review)
