Job description
At WHOOP, we're on a mission to unlock human performance and healthspan. WHOOP empowers members to perform at a higher level and live longer through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives. We are seeking an Engineering Manager, Sensor Intelligence (Advance Development) to lead a team of sensor intelligence advanced development engineers to guide the design of the next generation of WHOOP wearables devices including optical and mechanical design to improve the algorithm insight, transforming raw physiological signals into robust, real-time insights. As a leader, you will combine technical depth in hardware development with insight into optics, mechanical and electrical design, and algorithm design with strong people management skills. You will set direction, drive execution, and partner closely with cross-functional teams to ensure WHOOP’s advanced development is accurate, efficient, and reliable in real-world conditions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and Develop a High-Performing Team: Manage, mentor, and support Sensor Intelligence Engineers focused on advanced development, providing regular feedback, coaching, and clear growth paths.
  • Own Testing prototypes: Oversee the design, implementation, and testing of a next generation of WHOOP’s wearable platform, ensuring they perform reliably on resource-constrained devices.
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Partners: Work closely with Data Science, WHOOP Labs, Firmware, Hardware and Product to define requirements, integration points, and success metrics for the next generation of hardware.
  • Champion Engineering Rigor: Establish and uphold best practices for testing, documentation, and observability for new hardware design.
  • Contribute to Technical Strategy: Help define the roadmap and long-term strategy for next WHOOP hardware, including platform capabilities, tooling, and approaches for safely updating models in the field.
  • Support Recruiting and Org Building: Partner with recruiting to attract and hire top advanced development talent, and help shape the culture and operating model of the Sensor Intelligence Group.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven experience as a technical leader managing multiple teams or a growing engineering organization.
  • Experience growing high level individual contributor career growth at the staff level or higher.
  • 5+ years of industry experience in signal processing, optical design, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field, including 2+ years in a people management or technical lead role with mentorship responsibilities.
  • Hands-on experience developing and optimizing prototypes.
  • Proven ability to lead projects end-to-end, collaborating with cross-functional partners and balancing technical tradeoffs against product and business needs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of conveying complex technical topics to diverse audiences and aligning stakeholders around decisions.
  • Passion for building high-performing teams, fostering growth, and creating systems that scale to power WHOOP’s mission.
