Job description
Manufacturing Engineer (Torrance, CA)
Our client, a medical device manufacturer (pioneer of the pediatric wheelchair), is currently hiring a Manufacturing Engineer- this position is critical to their business as they evolve from heavy fabrication manufacturing to a more assembly-focused process. Facility is about 30k square feet, and this person will collaborate with approximately 50 people to serve as an Engineering visionary and leader of production transformation.

Summary:
The Continuous Improvement Engineer will lead the execution of a multi-phase manufacturing transformation for the Torrance, CA facility, guiding the transition from heavy fabrication to light assembly. This role is responsible for shaping the site’s future-state operating model and driving operational changes that support long-term efficiency, scalability, and cost optimization.

Responsibilities:
Lead the operational transition from heavy fabrication to a focus on light assembly through workforce skill and resourcing model redesign and layout, material flow, and work cell configuration.
Develop value stream mapping (stock to Assembly operations) to propose phased improvements to floor layout considering subassembly outsourcing.
Identify and execute near-term improvements that reduce complexity, waste and overhead.
Develop equipment and tooling plans to support a new layout and improved productivity.
Design and implement interim operating models that support production continuity while longer-term systems are developed.
Apply Lean manufacturing systems principles to support transformation objectives.
Establish performance baselines and track progress using operational metrics tied to business outcomes.
Evaluate and improve space utilization, indirect labor models and operational support structures.
Responsible for work cell decommissioning and continuous improvement.

Background and experience:
Minimum 5 years of experience in manufacturing operations, manufacturing engineering, or operations transformation roles. Demonstrated experience executing plant-level operational transitions, such as: Fabrication to assembly shifts, changes in manufacturing mix or capability, or cost structure overhead reduction initiatives.
Direct ownership experience transitioning a facility from fabrication to assembly, including layout redesign, work cell decommissioning, material flow, and labor model changes.
Candidates from manufacturing-heavy environments (industrial, assembly, high-mix production).
Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering–first background.
Proven experience leading plant-level operational transitions.
Hands-on Lean application tied to throughput, labor efficiency, and cost.
Experience redesigning layouts, simplifying operations, outsourcing/decommissioning work.
Candidates accountable for output and operational results (not just compliance).
Hands-on application experience of Lean manufacturing principles in a production environment.
Ability to translate operational changes into financial and capacity implications.
Experience in multi-product or mixed-mode manufacturing environments preferred.
Background in both engineered and repeatable assembly operations preferred.
Experience working in evolving operating models preferred.
Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
